If you follow us at Deep Roots Collective you know we believe in growing deeply rooted hearts, souls, minds, and strengths for a deeply rooted life. This is based on Mark 12:30 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength”. There are so many things we can do in order for us to build that depth in all these areas of our lives. Sometimes though, we forget to also clear out all the things that have turned us from the Lord us along the way.

I am so proud of all the work you are doing to add to your life! To grow and change and renew and rejuvenate. Now, let’s also declutter so all that work in growing deep roots is not damaged by decay and rot. This means taking inventory of the deceitful tendencies of your heart, the wandering of your mind, the distractions of your soul and the neglect of your strength.

Opening your Heart

  1. Take stock of your motivations and desires. What is leading you when you make a decision? Are they pure and facing the Lord? Start your day with intentional time with the Lord - through prayer or in His word. God’s word sanctifies us, making us pure. Through time with Him, you will receive His wisdom to walk in the right way. Alternatively, try journaling about your desires and reflecting on what is distracting you - making your heart deceitful. Reflect on tangible ways that you can rid of the impurity in your life.

  2. Observe your emotions. At the root of our heart is our emotions. When our emotions are not biblically aligned, our heart is rooted in this earthly world. Are your emotions worshiping and reflective of God? Or are they led by the enemy of our own intent and our culture? Check out this feeling wheel to help identify what you are feeling and where in the bible it is displayed. Use this as a guide to how these feelings should be expressed.

Renewing your Mind

  1. Begin by taking some time to reflect on your negative thoughts and the behaviors that are attached to those thoughts. Pray about the way that you can combat those negative thoughts. Write the Truth that proves those cognitions wrong. Then, write each negative thought down and toss them in the fire.

  2. Straighten up your priorities. Take inventory of all the things you are responsible for and engage with on a daily basis. Which of these things can you let go of? Which of these things can you do less of? What things actually matter? Putting your priorities in order and honoring what matters most to you will allow you to let some things go that don’t serve you.

Rejuvenating your Soul

  1. Find a new (or reintroduce) intentional practice with the Lord. As we go through life, it can be easy to lose the daily disciplines that grow us closer in relationship with the lord. We should never feel pressured to do all of the spiritual disciplines, especially when we are building from the ground up. So instead of trying to do them all perfectly, find the ones that work for you. Try 15 minutes of prayer, a new devotional, or 30 minutes of reading your bible. Your soul will thank you for it.

  2. Use gratitude and appreciation to reconnect. When we find things we are thankful for in our relationships and share them with those loved ones, we can provide ourselves with our own dopamine hit - which means more happy vibes too. I challenge you to reach out to one person a day for a week thanking them for something they make you grateful for. Not only will it make your soul more grateful, it will also be a model for those you reach out too.

Prioritizing your Strength

  1. Consider your relationships. Which ones add to your overall walk with the Lord and which ones distract. Community is so imperative to our life, but when we are mixed up with the wrong type of influences, we so easily walk away from the life we desire. This doesn’t mean you have to necessarily cut these people off, but boundaries can be a beautiful practice to protect the deepest relationship of all - the one you have with God.

  2. Create a self-care routine. It takes 30 days to make a habit, and research suggests we should only try to build 1 or 2 habits at a time. Physical self care could be introducing a new intuitive eating and nutrition plan, exercising more, or getting regular sleep.

  3. Are you moving enough? Exercise is so important to getting back to equilibrium. When considering if you move enough, note that it doesn’t have to mean breaking a crazy sweat or spending 2 hours in the gym. If these things work for you, great! Otherwise just consider taking a simple stroll in your neighborhood. Plus you will get bonus points for moving in the sunshine - nature's greatest multivitamin.
