You’re a Theologian: Trust in the Knowledge of the Lord Within You

The Spirit dwells within you. You are knowing of the knowledge of the Lord.

As a millennial I am a victim of the authority generation. The generation that is so entrenched in “nothing I think/believe is true, unless confirmed by an authority figure.” I could go into the long history of why this happened to us - but to make the long story short it was planned this way. Those looking to breed a well behaved working class changed our school structure to teach us all that we must think a certain way, use less critical thought, and not trust information unless it comes from an authority figure in the field.

The greatest thing to happen to Generation Z was the internet. We now have access to so much information that we don’t have to rely on authority to be the only bearers of truth. We all can have truth, know truth, share truth.

While this concept applies to just about every field - school, work, politics, media etc, it is no less prevalent in the church. And this concept - of all of us having access to the truth - goes well beyond the age of the internet.

That truth goes back to the beginning of time.

“But we have the mind of Christ” 1 Corinthians 2:16

In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul shares that we all have the Spirit of the Lord and therefore the mind of Christ within us. He implores to them that we do not have to be flashy, impressive, or conventionally smart to share God’s word. We do not have to be taught through formal bible college or seminary to share God’s word.

So many people wanted a “letter of recommendation” from Paul on his credentials to spread the word, but Paul insisted that the Holy Spirit ordains the knowledge God wants us to have and shares it with us. Only the Holy Spirit knows God’s wisdom and truth and only the Spirit can reveal it to us - not man.

“You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone.” 2 Corinthians 3:2

We do not need an authority figure to tell us what God has already ordained for us to know.

As true believers, the Holy Spirit dwells us within us. Therefore we are approved to know and be moved by God’s wisdom as the Spirit sees fit. It is all we need to be competent and worthy of knowing and sharing the Word.

So millennials - and all those who feel the need of authority to confirm or teach or know - remember - seek knowledge from the Spirit first. Do not turn to man, a book, or the internet.

Turn to the pages of scripture. Turn to the relationship you have with Christ. Turn to the discernment of the Spirit.
